The Flopsy Bunny 50p is one of four Beatrix Potter coin designs issued by The Royal Mint in 2018 and it might be the cutest. It’s inspired by The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies, first published in 1909: one of Potter’s most popular Little Tales thanks to its beloved rabbit characters. The author and illustrator had previously printed two stories about bunnies and this one uses old characters and introduces new ones including Flopsy Bunny and her six children. Once again Potter’s rabbits evade the clutches of Mr McGregor with a little help from their animal friends. On this Fifty Pence piece Flopsy Bunny is shown wearing a cloak. The text around her head reads ‘FLOPSY BUNNY’. It’s a charming design and one sure to be enjoyed by nostalgic adults and young fans of the classic books. The other side of this coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, in use on British coins since 2015. The Royal Mint has been issuing coins featuring Beatrix Potter characters since 2016. This edition is struck in 8.00 grams of .925 sterling silver. It’s finished to finest proof standard with colour printed details, bringing out the detail of the original illustrations. It comes in a printed acrylic display case which protects the coin from little fingers. Also included: the original box and a certificate of authenticity from The Royal Mint.
