28 July 2016 marked the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. In celebration of her life and work, The Royal Mint released a series of four Fifty Pence pieces depicting four of her most popular characters: Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin, and this charming portrait of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. Originally written as illustrated story letters for the children of her friend, and former governess, Beatrix Potter’s stories were made all the more special by her watercolour illustrations and the immersive world she created. Potter was inspired by her own childhood which was full of many adventures and pets including a hedgehog which were kept with her brother, Bertram. Although best known for her ‘Little Tales’, Beatrix Potter was also a well respected mycologist, renown for her watercolours of fungi. She invested her funds into buying and conserving land and property in her beloved Lake District, the majority of which was gifted to the National Trust after her death in 1943.

This Fifty Pence features a colourful design by Emma Noble on the reverse depicting Mrs Tiggy-Winkle in her iconic washer-woman outfit. The other side shows Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, the fifth official effigy used. Presented in a smart acrylic case and accompanied by a booklet containing additional information about the author and her characters, this coin is one of 14,993 in this format. It comes with its numbered certificate of authenticity and is struck in 8.00 grams of .925 sterling silver with a diameter of 27.30 millimetres.

Silver Proof

Proof coins are amongst the finest commemorative coins produced by The Royal Mint. Made with the highest care and consideration, our Proof coins feature a sharpness of detail like no other.

The dies used to strike Proof coins are hand-finished to ensure that all imperfections are removed. Blanks are fed into the coin press by hand before being struck up to six times, at a lower speed and with less pressure than other finishes, to preserve the finer details of the design.
